Why It's Better to Hop on Three Legs Than Limp on Four

My name is Jerry, and I am a "Tripod Dog" (or "Tripawd," as my pawrents have coined the phrase).

I lost my leg in 2006, after I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, or canine bone cancer. My pawrents thought it was the end of the world. Not only did I have cancer, but I was going to loose my leg? Huh?

Pretty soon though, I showed them that life on three legs isn't so bad. Don't let any silly human tell you otherwise. Three legged dogs can do just about anything that four leggers can do, only with more style and pizzazz!

If your dog is about to undergo a leg amputation, fear not. Remember, it's important to stay pawsitive to help your dog recover faster.

After you're done crying, take a minute to breathe, and laugh. Here are some humorous plusses to being a Tripawd that we hope will put a smile on your face (courtesy of our wonderful Tripawd family members):

  • You can make a lot of wonderful new friends with a Tripawd: Everyone wants to know your story!
  • Humans are glad that we bark to be let out, instead of pounding on the door
  • It's easier to brush our tummys
  • We have fewer toenails to trim
  • Your overweight dog can instantly lose 5 to 10 pounds
  • Three legged dogs are an instant kid/babe magnet
  • There is much less hair in the house with a three legged dog around
  • Snuggling is easier without that leg getting in the way

As hard as it is, the best part about going through this experience is that you will truly be amazed at how resilient your dog is. We tripawds handle amputation better than any human can, and we never, ever look back or regret.

And neither should you! So hang in there, and look for my upcoming Hubs about caring for a canine amputee, bone cancer, helpful tripawd accessories, and more.

i have a 3 legged dog his names gozer(he came with the name). we adopted him from a shelter and didnt have to train him at all. hes a beagle/german shpherd/ yellow lab mix and his wicked sweet. little kids and puppies make him nervous but hes never agressive. he used to live on a farm so we think he was either run over by a tractor or shot with a gun because my brother was shooting cans in the backyard and gozer was really scared and he is scared of the lawnmower and thunderstorms.

The first bullet, "You can make a lot of wonderful new friends with a Tripawd," is completely true! When we first got our (4-legged) dog, we met a lot of folks in the neighborhood. After her surgery, people came out of the woodwork. Almost 5 months later, and she is still charming new people with her cute hop-walk.
